New CD by wonderful singer, songwriter and guitarist Raul Midon is out today. “Synthesis” contains much of the material he played on last year’s tour with Stanley Jordan, nearly a year after he started putting tracks onto disk. I was sold when he opened the solo performance with Don’t Take It That Way,; it’s not as crisp with the full backing band but still has a great hook. “Synthesis” gets an “explicit” label for one song that is truly from the heart (and I’d love to know the incident that inspired it).
Midon’s scat-style, false-trombone singing is great; it adds texture to a CD that has gone down a decidedly more pop-infused path than some of his earlier work that blended Latin, soul, blues and a bit of jazz. Not a bad way to start open car window listening season.
