My yoga adventures continue. I’ve come to some basic realizations about the practice of yoga and my body’s tolerance for it – namely, my hamstrings are short, my legs are not like Barbie’s (in that they don’t rotate neatly in front of me for sitting purposes) but very much like other men’s (they don’t open out at the hip very well), and that I have enough upper body strength to be mildly dangerous to myself and others on nearby mats.

This week I invented two new poses.

The “six-pointed star” is a variation on the more powerful five-pointed star. The six-pointed star is formed by standing as if starting the more open five-pointed star, but the hands are brought together in front of the body, about the distance you’d stand from the tray rail at a Vegas buffet. The buffet imagery is very powerful and important to this pose, as you need to think of your hands guiding a very small tray along the rail, elbows out to form the other two points of the star’s downward facing triangle. While the five-pointed star is a starting point for vertical stretches and the open pose enables breathing and energy, the six-pointed variation is a starting point for eating after class.

After several sun salutations and perhaps a few high and low plank transitions, it’s time for “dropped pudding”. This continues the food related theme, and is done exactly as its name implies. More elegant transitions out of downward dog are possible but neither necessary nor typical.
